Fall is the time of year to clean out our closets, and during the month of October, we are holding a community-wide winter coat & boot collection. Due to the growing need in our community, we are collecting new and gently-used, warm, clean coats and boots of all sizes from infant to adult. The items will be distributed to families in need within our community in November.

Please drop off your donations in the Fall Coat & Boot Drive box outside of the Indian Trail main office from

October 14th – October 28th

Weekly Update

Good afternoon!  After another week with a strange schedule at school--we are really looking forward to a full, 5 day week at Indian Trail.

Here is a quick recap of what we have been working on!

Literacy--We are continuing our study of identity and immigration.  We began reading In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, which is the story of a young Chinese immigrant to New York City.  Ask your son or daughter to explain to you which grade Shirley got placed into at her new school....and why that grade is incorrect!!  We are also continuing to work on visualization and we just started discussing character traits.  We also reviewed common and proper nouns in grammar.

Math--This week we focused on rounding!!  The students are doing a great job rounding into the hundred thousands and millions places.  I also introduced Quick Tables on ALEKS.  

Social Studies--This week we participated in 3 different geography challenges. These challenges involved reading different types of maps (elevation map, precipitation map, etc.) as well as using longitude and latitude to find the location of different places around the country.  Next week we will begin our study of the Northeast Region.

Writing--We are continuing to write our personal narratives, with an emphasis on more descriptive language!!

Open House Reminder!!

Good afternoon!

I just wanted to send out a quick reminder about Open House!  Indian Trail's Open House program is tomorrow night, September 17, at 6:30 pm.  The program will begin in the big gym with a presentation from our new principal, Dr. Maria Grable. The classroom presentations are from 7:00-7:20 and then from 7:30-7:50.

I hope that you can make it!  I have lots of information to share with you.

First Week Review

Good afternoon! It has been such an exciting first week of school. Our class is off to a great start and I am excited to begin our curriculum next week. Here is a quick recap of what we have done over the past few days:

--Tiger Stripe Behavior: We reviewed the behavior expectations in all of the different parts of our school (classroom, lunchroom, playground, hallways, bathrooms, etc.). The focus is to Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful at all times!

--Building Our Classroom Community: We did several activities to get to know one another and to build relationships within our new classroom. We created a Who's Who in Room 134 with unique facts about ourselves, the students created a Venn Diagram with a partner about each other's similarities and differences, and we shared fun facts about our summer vacations.

--Tech Time: We are beginning to use the wonderful resource of our Chromebooks! This week we learned how to use Google Calendar (which is where we record our homework assignments--I'll share more about this at Open House), we also joined my Google Classroom and learned about the website Padlet. Padlet is a great website for reflecting, brainstorming, and displaying facts.

Those are just a few of the highlights from our first week! I can not thank you enough for your support, and I am excited to begin our Literacy and Math curriculum next week. Please let me know if you have any questions!!

Art Can Get Messy

If your child is concerned about their clothes, please have them bring a smock to school. Some examples are an old large t-shirt, an old button-down shirt, or a School Smart full protection vinyl smock. Students should try to avoid wearing their best clothes and shoes on the day they have art.

Upcoming Dental Visit

THE DENTIST IS COMING TO INDIAN TRAIL!!!

NSSD112 has partnered with Smile Programs and Lake County Health Department to bring the mobile dentist back to our schools.  The program will be at Indian Trail on FRIDAY, APRIL 17.  

Your child will be bringing home the information and permission slip this week.  If you are interested, please fill out the permission form and return to school no later than MARCH 13.

Indian Trail Kindergarten Round Up for the 2015-16 School Year:

It's kindergarten registration time for children who will be 5 years of age on or before September 1st, 2015.  Please pick up registration materials in our main office or call 224-765-3500.  If you have neighbors with children preparing to begin school, please encourage them to call the Indian Trail School office. Registration is ongoing.

Scholastic Book Club!

The first Scholastic Book order of the year was sent home today!  Please return your money and order forms by next Monday, September 29.  All checks should be made out to Scholastic, and you only need to write one check--even if you order from multiple forms.  

You may also place your order online!  Visit www.scholastic.com/readingclub and use our class activation code LLGH4.  You may order and pay for your books quickly and conveniently!

Dot Day is coming!!

Help Indian Trail celebrate in Dot Day - September 15th

This year Dot Day falls on Monday September 15th. Dot Day is a celebration created by Peter Reynolds, author of The Dot, to encourage students find their strengths and use their own creativity to make their own mark. To help your student make their mark on September 15th encourage them to wear any kind of polka dot, spotted, or any kind of representational dot on their clothing that day.

--Your weekly Current Event is due on Friday.
--All spelling tests will be on Friday.  This week we are doing math number words for spelling.  The spelling words are the numbers one through fifteen.
--Tonight there is an additional page of math homework that is due tomorrow.

First Full Week!

It has been an awesome first full week of school!  I hope that you enjoy our crazy new class picture.

Don't forget to read over the long holiday weekend.  Your Biblionasium reading log is due on Tuesday morning.  The expectation is 150 minutes of reading.

New reading log!!

Good afternoon!  What a fun day of school.....I'm still drying off from the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! I hope the students enjoyed seeing their teachers soaking wet!

Today, I introduced the website Biblionasium to our class.  Biblionasium is a virtual library customized for each student and his or her reading interests.  We will also be using Biblionasium to log our reading minutes each week.  The 4th grade expectation is to read 150 minutes per week--which works out to 30 minutes, 5 times a week.  The number of minutes read is easy logged on the Biblionasium site. Please ask your student to show you this interactive new learning tool!

Also, please remember to check your Homework Calendar.  All students need to bring in a smock for art and a pair of headphones.  You should also begin studying for the Classmate Name spelling test. First names are required, and last names are bonus!  See you tomorrow!
